April Nature Happenings

  • Project FeederWatch ends this month. www.birds.cornell.edu/pfw
  • Broad-tailed and Black-chinned Hummingbirds begin to arrive. Be sure to have their feeders ready. Hummingbird nectar recipe: Mix 4 four parts water to one part table sugar... no red dye!
  • Put out nesting materials for birds. Stop by the store! We have these!
  • Bullocks and Scott's Orioles begin to arrive. Place your orange-colored nectar feeder out in the open to entice flying orioles to your yard. Oriole nectar recipe: Mix six parts water to one part table sugar. Orioles also like oranges and grape jelly. Be sure to choose grape jelly without high fructose corn syrup.
  • Lesser Goldfinch begin migrating to higher elevations.
  • Tree Swallows begin nesting later this month.
  • Shorebirds pass through showing their breeding plumage.
  • The Lyrids meteor shower in 2025 will be active from April 16 to April 25, with its peak on April 22 and 23.
  • Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection.
