Birds, Blooms and Beyond

Spring is full on in New Mexico and nature is putting on a spectacular show. There’s so much to notice and explore this season:

Bird Migration Magic:

It's peak migration! Keep an eye out for warblers, orioles, grosbeaks, tanagers, and hummingbirds as they make their way into the state. Providing fruit like orange halves and apples for tanagers, orioles, and grosbeaks is a wonderful easy treat for these birds. We have treat feeders to make this easy.

Listen for unusual bird calls as a clue to find new birds visiting your backyard. Also, have you noticed how colorful birds are this time of year? Birds in their breeding plumage are nature’s showstoppers, flaunting vibrant colors and patterns to attract mates for nesting season. Who doesn't like a spiffy looking partner?

Blooming Time:

From Lilacs to the Desert Willows, landscapes are coming to life with color. Watch for Broad-tailed and Black-chinned Hummingbirds at your nectar feeders and flowers. Don't forget water is a vital part of your backyard habitat. Birds require water through all seasons and in our dry climate water can be tough to locate. If you want to attract the greatest variety of birds add a water source along with your feeders. We have options for bird baths and fountains. Stop by!

Pollinators on the Move:

Butterflies, bees, and even bats are buzzing about sprinkling magic into every garden and field. Did you know that hummingbirds are pollinators too? These little cuties work hard making their way in life. Add a hummingbird feeder to your yard and watch them zip in for a snack.

Local Events to Consider:

  • Celebrate Spring Migration with Friends of Bosque del Apache May 2 - May 4. Multiple events are scheduled from guided bird walks to a Bird Watching 101 class.
  • Ever heard of ornitherapy? Ornitherapy is the practice of using birdwatching and the presence of birds as a mindful and therapeutic activity to enhance mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Join us on May 6 at 11 am for an in-store presentation and book signing with Deb Caldwell and Holly Merker.
  • Visit the Rio Grande Nature Center for local bird watching opportunities or a garden stroll. The Spring Garden Festival happens on May 10 and May 11. Each day of the festival includes guided bird walks, plants for sale, crafts for kids, nonprofit booths, and bird identification assistance.
  • Join Josiah Lavender on a guided bird outing on May 18 at 8 am. Location is Tingley Beach and the adjacent trails. Meet at the main parking lot and be ready to walk at a relaxed pace for 2-3 hours. All ages welcome.

A car trip more your thing? Grab your favorite tea or coffee drink and explore the Sandia Mountains or the Jemez Mountains for a mix of wildlife and breathtaking spring views.

The Stars and Beyond:

The Eta Aquarids meteor shower is an annual celestial event that happens as our Earth travels through the debris left by Halley's Comet. This year it’s active from April 19 to May 28, with the peak expected on May 5 and 6. This meteor shower offers the chance to see up to 50 meteors per hour! To catch the show, find a spot far from city or street lights and head out before dawn. Lie flat on your back with your feet pointing east and look up at the sky. After about 30 minutes, your eyes will adjust, and the meteors will start to appear. After that? Hit your favorite breakfast spot!

Nature is calling! With birds, annual events, and the stars there is something for everyone to experience. Share your sightings, photos, and stories with us.
