Prevent Window Strikes and Help Save the Song Birds

A bird that flies away after hitting a window isn’t necessarily okay. Many birds suffer serious injuries that aren’t immediately visible. Reflections of sky, trees, and greenery can make windows look like open flight paths, and young birds are especially vulnerable as they learn to navigate their surroundings.

The good news? You can help prevent window strikes! A few simple changes can make your windows easier for birds to recognize as barriers rather than open spaces.

  • Think about feeder placement: Keep feeders within 3 feet of a window or more than 10 feet away. At close range, birds don’t have enough space to build up speed before reaching the glass. Farther away, they have more time to see and avoid the window.
  • Add visual cues: Window decals, exterior screens, or other bird-friendly window treatments can help break up reflections and make glass more visible.
  • Try a window feeder: A window-mounted feeder gives birds a reason to approach the glass slowly—and gives you an amazing front-row seat to your feathered visitors!
